Microorganisms are another pesky issue. Bacteria, algae, and fungi can grow in the water, especially if it’s warm and stagnant. These microorganisms can form slime, which can clog the pipes and reduce water flow. Some bacteria, like Legionella, can also pose a serious health risk to people in the surrounding area.

So, what can we do to treat the water and prevent these problems?

One of the first steps is filtration. Filtration is a must – have for removing large particles from the water. We usually recommend using a combination of different filters. A pre – filter with a relatively large pore size can catch the bigger debris like sand and dirt. Then, a finer filter can be used to remove smaller particles that might otherwise pass through the pre – filter. This helps to protect the more sensitive components of the chiller unit from damage.

Next up is chemical treatment. Chemicals play a crucial role in water treatment for chiller units. There are different types of chemicals we use.

Scale inhibitors are one of them. These chemicals work by preventing the minerals in the water from forming scale. They basically interfere with the crystallization process of the minerals. A common type of scale inhibitor is a polymer – based product. These polymers attach to the mineral particles and prevent them from sticking together and forming large scale deposits.

Corrosion inhibitors are also essential. They create a protective layer on the metal surfaces of the chiller unit, preventing oxygen and other corrosive elements from coming into contact with the metal. There are different formulations of corrosion inhibitors, and the choice depends on the type of metal used in the chiller. For example, for copper components, a different inhibitor might be used compared to for steel components.

Biocides are used to control the growth of microorganisms. There are two main types: oxidizing and non – oxidizing biocides. Oxidizing biocides, like chlorine, work by killing the microorganisms through oxidation. They are effective but can also be a bit harsh on the chiller system if not used properly. Non – oxidizing biocides, on the other hand, work in a different way. They disrupt the metabolic processes of the microorganisms, killing them without the strong oxidative effect.

Now, let’s talk about how often these treatments should be done. Well, it really depends on a few factors. The quality of the incoming water is a big one. If the water has a high mineral content or a lot of contaminants, more frequent treatment might be needed. The operating conditions of the chiller unit also matter. If the chiller is running constantly at high loads, the water is likely to get dirtier and need more attention.

In general, regular monitoring of the water quality is crucial. We recommend taking water samples at least once a month and testing them for things like pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), and the presence of microorganisms. Based on the test results, the appropriate treatment can be adjusted.

Another important aspect is make – up water management. When water is lost from the chiller system due to evaporation or leaks, make – up water is added. This make – up water needs to be of good quality. If the make – up water is not properly treated, it can introduce new contaminants into the system and undo all the hard work of the water treatment. So, it’s important to ensure that the make – up water goes through the same filtration and chemical treatment processes as the main water in the chiller system.

There are also some best practices for maintaining the water treatment system itself. The chemical feeders need to be calibrated regularly to ensure that the right amount of chemicals is being added to the water. The filters should be replaced or cleaned as per the manufacturer’s recommendations. And any signs of problems with the water treatment system, like low chemical levels or clogged filters, should be addressed immediately.
